Tour Description

Visit the House and the Castle of the Popes!

This tour includes two incredible landmarks in Rome: the Vatican and Castel Sant’Angelo. Even if the first sight is much more famous, the second is equally important, and its history is deeply connected to the Vatican’s.

We will start our tour from the Vatican Museum, then we’ll go to the Sistine Chapel and finish at St. Peter’s Basilica. A usual Rome tour…seasoned with beautiful art, mystery and history.

We will lead you through the marvelous rooms of the Museums, telling you everything about the great characters who contributed making Rome unique: Michelangelo, Raphael, the Pope Julius the 2nd, Bernini and many others. We will talk about the frescoes, the tapestries, the sculptures, but also the history, the plots of the papal court, the hidden secrets of the greatest Italian artists and their passions, weaknesses, and obsessions.

After the Museums we will tour the Sistine Chapel, with its incredibly famous Michelangelo’s paintings, and St. Peter’s Basilica, the most important Catholic church in the world that was built on top of the tomb of St. Peter, the first pope, and hosts the Pietà by Michelangelo and many other masterpieces.

Then, we’ll walk to the close Castel Sant’Angelo, one of the biggest and most beautiful buildings in Rome. This monumental structure was built in 2nd century AD to be the tomb of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, later becoming a prison and eventually the wonderful palace of the Popes. It served as a safe residence where the successors of St. Peter found asylum in times of danger, escaping from the Vatican through a fortified walkaway that goes all the way to the Castle.

We’ll end our tour at the Bridge of the Angels, which stands directly in front of the Castle, where the beauty of Bernini’s statues clashes severely with the terrible memory of public executions of prisoners during the Renaissance and later.

In no other place more than Castel Sant’Angelo love and death are two sides of the same Roman coin.

Testimonials

Our family had the pleasure of visiting Rome for the first time just before Christmas 2016 and we had heard great things about Giovanni and Roads to Rome Private Tours so we decided to give it a try. I can say that he easily exceeded our expectations during the parts of the two days we spent touring major points of interest with him. An archeologist by trade, Giovanni has an encyclopedic knowledge of the Roman culture, presents information in a highly entertaining manner and has an excellent command of the English language. We can’t wait to go back to Italy and Rome in the future and will make sure to connect with him again. Bravo and grazie, Giovanni!
