Tour Description

Where Art & Religion Merge.

This tour by Roads to Rome includes three main sights: the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica. We will start our tour from the Museums, that host many of the greatest masterpieces of Roman and Greek art.

Statues, mosaics, tapestries, and also amazing frescoes will make you wish to become a tour guide so that you can be here every day. During our museum tour we will also see the Rooms painted by the greatest rival of Michelangelo, and the only painter that he felt in competition with: Raphael.

Second stop will be the Sistine Chapel, covered by the incredible frescoes by Michelangelo, who worked in this church for almost 10 years total, painting the ceiling and the western wall with the Last Judgement. The Sistine Chapel is the triumph of renaissance art.

Finally, we will visit the most important and the biggest Catholic church in the world: St. Peter’s Basilica. Built right on top of the tomb of St. Peter, it’s also the basilica with the richest decoration. First designed by Bramante, also Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini and many others gave their contribution to its development, making it become the most impressive place of worship ever, the place where art and religion mix in an incredibly powerful way.

Last stop: St. Peter’s square. A masterpiece of baroque architecture. It will leave you breathless, and probably hungry and ready for a typical Italian lunch. But no worries, we have plenty of places we can recommend.

Testimonials

At the recommendation of a friend we contacted Roads to Rome Private Tours to arrange 3 private half day tours while in Rome. They were so quick to respond by email and helped us plan our own custom itinerary! Maurizio’s depth of knowledge and passion for Rome/history is what made our experience so much “more” than just a group tour!! He was great at relating to both the adults and kids. I would recommend Maurizio and co without hesitation. Grazie Mille!
