Tour Description

Ostia Antica Day Trip: the Port of Rome

Ostia: the “gate” of Rome

Come discover the ancient port of Rome!
Built at the mouth of the Tiber river, the name of the city of Ostia comes from the Latin word “ostium”, which means both “mouth” and “gate“. In fact, no name could be more appropriate, since the “mouth” of the Tiber river was also the “gate” through which goods, people, ideas, and religions coming from far away reached Ostia first, and then Rome.

Ostia was the port of Rome, and it’s one of the best preserved ancient cities in the world. It will remind you of the more famous Pompeii, but it’s even more monumental and it’s just 20 minutes away from Rome. Here, you will find the remarkably intact ruins tucked away in a beautiful wooded area: the temples, the baths, the ancient houses and the squares in Ostia antica are still greatly preserved, and you will feel like you’ve been traveling back in time when you will walk on a road that was built at the time that Christ was born.

Just like no other archaeological site, this ancient city offers you a direct glimpse at the religion, commerce, and social life of ancient Roman society. This is one of the most interesting archeological sites near Rome.

Come discover this 2000-years-old meltin’ pot.

Testimonials

“At the recommendation of a friend we contacted Roads to Rome Private Tours to arrange 3 private half day tours while in Rome. They were so quick to respond by email and helped us plan our own custom itinerary! Maurizio’s depth of knowledge and passion for Rome/history is what made our experience so much “more” than just a group tour!! He was great at relating to both the adults and kids. I would recommend Maurizio and co without hesitation. Grazie Mille!”
