Tour Description

Explore the Etruscan Landscapes!

The Etruscans were one of the most important peoples in Italy. Although they occupied a large territory between Rome and Florence, most of the Etruscan cities were in Tuscany, which literally means “the region of the Etruscans”.

They had a huge influence over the Romans, who were even ruled by three Etruscan kings for about 70 years during the 6th century B.C.

The Etruscan civilization started in the late 8th century B.C. and had its climax in the 6th century B.C., when massive temples were built in the cities and in the important sacred areas outside of the urban settlements, where people from all over the Mediterranean area came to worship the Etruscan gods, to trade, to watch athletic games and join the political assemblies.

Unfortunately the Etruscans lived too close to the Romans, and they could not resist the power of the roman legions which conquered all the Etruscan cities between the 4th and the 3rd century B.C.: most of the Etruscan cities were turned into roman colonies or simply destroyed; that happened also to the city of Caere, nowadays called Cerveteri, which was conquered by the Romans in the year 273 B.C.

Nothing is left of the city,  but luckily the “city of the dead” (the necropolis, which was the cemetery of Caere) is still really well preserved. During the tour, we will visit the Banditaccia necropolis, which is a massive cemetery with thousands of tombs; many of them are gigantic artificial hills called “tumuli”, inside of which you can see the actual tombs, carved into the natural rock. Some of the tombs are instead massive subterranean structures beautifully decorated with paintings and reliefs.

Our guide will pick up up at your hotel and you’ll reach Cerveteri by car, where you will have a tour of this amazing necropolis. He will help you explore the tombs, the alleys, the life of the Etruscans in the most entertaining way, showing you the most hidden and mysterious sides of this dead civilization that charmed and inspired the poets, the artists and the archaeologists for centuries.

Testimonials

“We hired Giovanni to tour the Vatican. He was extremely well informed, passionate and funny. We learned so many interesting facts about the Vatican and Roman history that we would never have learned by reading a guide book. We enjoyed the tour so much that we hired him on our second day in Rome to tour the Colosseum and Basilica San Clemente. Giovanni also helped us to enjoy our stay by giving us restaurant recommendations and other helpful tips. He is a wonderful ambassador for Rome!”
