Tour Description

Underneath Rome: The Underground Private Tour (Catacombs, the Basilica of Saint Clement, Roman Houses on the Caelian Hill)

Discover the subterranean heart of Rome!

Unlike most of the cities, Rome is not just “one” city. In fact, Rome is many cities built one on top of each other, layer upon layer, and you can explore it not only walking on its surface, but also going underground, to its hidden core. That’s where we’re going to take you. Down to the archaeological wonders of ancient Rome.

This tour includes three sights: the Catacombs, the Basilica of St. Clement and the Roman Houses on the Caelian Hill.

The Catacombs are ancient subterranean cemeteries carved in the natural bedrock. They are massive, fascinating mazes where the early Christians were buried, even before Christianity had become officially legal. We’ll show you the underground chapels, the tombs, the beautifully decorated rooms. And, most important, we’ll be your guide through the labyrinth!

The Basilica of St. Clemente is a beautiful church from the 11th century; however, going down a staircase, you’ll find out that it is built on top of a more ancient basilica from the 4th century AD, which is still really well preserved.

But that’s not the end.

Underneath the lower basilica there is one more building: a temple of the mysterious Persian god Mithra, whose followers gathered in secret rooms called “caves,” sharing meals and celebrating secret rituals. Even though you have not been initiated to the religion of Mithra, you’ll have the possibility to see the temple and the rooms where the followers of this Persian god prepared themselves to celebrate this mystery cult.

The last sight is equally fascinating: the Roman Houses on the Caelian Hill. We’ll show you one of the very few ancient Roman houses that still exist, whose rooms are covered with really nice frescoes that are almost 2000 years old. We’ll talk about the bloody roots of Christianity, that the Romans fought harshly, and lead you through the beautifully decorated rooms of the house where the martyrs John and Paul died for their faith.

Testimonials

“My boyfriend and I recently enjoyed a customized tour of the Colosseum and Basilica San Clemente with Giovanni. What an experience!! I am in awe of the amount of knowledge that Giovanni was able to pass along to us during our four hours with him. I only wish we had more time in Rome so that we could spend more time with him and learn even more. Do yourself a favour, and book a tour today! It’s the absolute best way to take in and appreciate all of the amazing history Rome has to offer.”
