Tour Description

Ancient Rome is not just the Colosseum!

During this tour, you’ll be taken up to the sky, to the top of the Palatine Hill, and then down underneath the earth, all the way to the subterranean heart of the city of Rome, inside the basilica of St. Clement’s. People love underground treasures and buried mysteries of Rome!

This package has been designed so that you can explore not only the surface of the city of Rome in the area of the Colosseum and Roman Forum but also its hidden depths, and have a bite of all the layers of this multi-layered Eternal City.

The tour will start from the Roman Forum, the core of the ancient city of Rome, where some of the most important political, social and religious activities took place. We’ll see the senate house, the Basilicas, the temple of Julius Caesar and many other incredible buildings. The second stop will be the Palatine Hill, where Romulus founded Rome in the year 753 B.C.

The third stop will be the Colosseum: the biggest and most important amphitheater in the world, where hundreds of gladiators met a horrible death forced into killing each other by the screams of the crowd.

After the Colosseum we’ll start the underground part of the tour: we will visit the Basilica of St. Clemente, which is a beautiful church from the 12th century; however, going down a staircase, you’ll find out that it is built on a more ancient basilica from the 4th century AD. But that’s not the end. Under the lower basilica there is one more layer: a temple of the mysterious Persian god Mithra, whose followers gathered in secret temples called “caves”, sharing meals and celebrating rituals that they were not allowed to talk about.

My boyfriend and I recently enjoyed a customized tour of the Colosseum and Basilica San Clemente with Giovanni. What an experience!! I am in awe of the amount of knowledge that Giovanni was able to pass along to us during our four hours with him. I only wish we had more time in Rome so that we could spend more time with him and learn even more. Do yourself a favour, and book a tour today! It’s the absolute best way to take in and appreciate all of the amazing history Rome has to offer.
